Commemorates 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Concurrent Resolution commemorating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

Whereas, The late United States Senator Gaylord Nelson, inspired to action after seeing the damage caused by an oil spill in 1969, founded Earth Day as a way of generating awareness about environmental issues; and

Whereas, On April 22, 1970 twenty million Americans, comprising 10 percent of the population of the United States at the time, demonstrated across the country to raise awareness about water and air pollution; and

Whereas, The attention garnered by Earth Day events to negative public health effects caused by pollution led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and the passage of the federal "Clean Air Act" and "Clean Water Act" by the end of 1970; and

Whereas, The celebration of the first Earth Day had an impact on this State, with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection being formed on the same day; and

Whereas, In 1990, Earth Day became an international event, with organizers mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries to action; and

Whereas, In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly, noting that Earth Day is observed each year in many countries, designated April 22nd as International Mother Earth Day, and invited all member states to use the day to consider environmental issues; and

Whereas, The scope of Earth Day events continues to expand, engaging people in over 190 countries to raise awareness about environmental issues; and

Whereas, April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and

Whereas, It is fitting and proper for the Legislature to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, in order to generate support for Earth Day events that will occur in this State, across the United States, and around the world, and to raise awareness about the environmental issues of our time; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey (the Senate concurring):

     1.    The Legislature commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day and recognizes the impact that this event has had, and continues to have, on public awareness and action regarding environmental issues.

     2.    The Legislature calls upon the public officials and citizens of this State to recognize and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

     3.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate or the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Governor, the Commissioner of Environmental Protection, and every member of Congress elected from this State.
