     Requires DOC to coordinate with MVC and assist inmates with driver's license renewals upon release from incarceration.

An Act concerning driver's licenses for certain inmates and supplementing Title 30 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    The Coordinator for Reentry and Rehabilitative Services appointed pursuant to section 4 of P.L.2009, c.329 (C.30:1B-6.3) shall notify the Chief Administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission when an inmate is initially admitted to a reception facility within the Department of Corrections that is responsible for the intake and assignment of offenders to a correctional facility.  The chief administrator shall send to the reception facility any driver's license renewal notice for an inmate who was the holder of a valid New Jersey driver's license on the date of incarceration.  The coordinator shall utilize the renewal notice to assist the inmate in renewing the inmate's driver's license prior to release from incarceration. 

 

     2.    This act shall take effect on the first day of the third month next following the date of enactment, but the Commissioner of Corrections and the Chief Administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission may take any administrative action in advance thereof, as shall be necessary for the implementation of this act.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires the Coordinator for Reentry and Rehabilitative Services within the Department of Corrections (DOC) to assist inmates in renewing a driver's license prior to release from incarceration. 

     Under the bill, the coordinator is required to notify the Chief Administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission when an inmate is initially admitted a reception facility within DOC that is responsible for the intake and assignment of offenders to a correctional facility.  The chief administrator would then be required to send to the reception facility any driver's license renewal notice for an inmate who was the holder of a valid New Jersey driver's license on the date of incarceration.  The coordinator shall utilize the renewal notice to assist the inmate in renewing his or her driver's license prior to release from incarceration.
