SYNOPSIS
Directs the Department of Corrections to advise new inmates of child support obligations and modification procedures.

An Act concerning child support and Department of Corrections inmates and amending P.L.2009, c.328.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. Section 8 of P.L.2009, c.328 (C.30:4-8.9) is amended to read as follows:
8. The Department of Corrections, through the Office of Transitional Services, shall, in addition to any other information provided during the intake process to a defendant sentenced to a period of incarceration, advise the defendant about any child support orders and judgments entered against him by the New Jersey Superior Court, [and] provide information on how he may petition the court for a temporary modification of these financial obligations ,and advise the defendant that unless an application is made for modification, the child support order in existence shall continue to accrue. The Administrative Office of the Courts shall provide sample forms and instructions for the self-represented modification of child support orders to the Department of Corrections. The Department of Corrections, through its Office of Transitional Services, shall assist inmates in child support modification procedures.

2. This act shall take effect immediately.
STATEMENT
This bill clarifies that the Department of Corrections is to provide new inmates with information concerning the enforcement of child support orders, procedures for the modification of orders, and information that unless an application is made for modification, the child support order in existence shall continue to accrue. The bill further directs the Department of Corrections to assist inmates in child support modification procedures.
