SYNOPSIS

     Increases penalty for operating motor vehicle equipped with television located or positioned so screen is visible to the driver.

An Act concerning motor vehicles and amending P.L.1951, c.134.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    Section 2 of P.L.1951, c.134 (C.39:3A-2) is amended to read as follows:

     2.    A person violating the provisions of this act shall, for each violation, be subject to a fine of [not more than fifty dollars ($50.00)] $250, or imprisonment for  a period not exceeding ten days, or both.

     In addition, the person shall be assessed, as provided under P.L.1982, c.43 (C.39:5-30.5 et seq.), two penalty points for each violation.

     2.    This act shall take effect on the first day of the third month following enactment.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill would increase the penalty for operating a motor vehicle that is equipped with a television that is located or positioned in such a way that the operator of the vehicle may watch it while driving.

     The current penalty for this offense is a fine of not more than $50, 10 days in prison, or both.

     This bill would increase the amount of the fine to $250 and directs the court to assess the offender two driver's license penalty points for each violation.
