SYNOPSIS

     Requires premium sharing for health care benefits for elected officials and certain appointed officials.

An Act concerning health care benefits for elected officials and certain appointed officials and supplementing various parts of the statutory law. 

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.  Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, an official holding elective public office in, or an appointed official serving on a multi-member board, commission, or authority of, a political subdivision of the State shall be required to pay annually at least 20 percent of the premium for health care benefits coverage provided through the public entity for the official and the official's dependents.  No such official shall accept any amount of money in consideration for waiving health care benefits coverage during active service. 

 

     2.  Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, an official holding an elective public office, or an appointed official serving on a multi-member board, commission, or authority, of this State shall be required to pay annually at least 20 percent of the premium for health care benefits coverage provided through the State for the official and the official's dependents.  No such official shall accept any amount of money in consideration for waiving health care benefits coverage during active service. 

 

     3.  This act shall take effect six months after enactment. 

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires State and local elected officials and appointed officials serving on State or local multi-member boards, commissions, or authorities to pay annually 20 percent of the premium for health care benefits coverage provided.  This bill would apply to all such active officials commencing six months after enactment. 

     In addition, the bill prohibits an elected official or such an appointed official from accepting any amount for waiving health care benefits coverage during active service.
