SYNOPSIS

Requires driver's licenses to display licensee's blood type.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Act concerning blood type on driver's licenses and supplementing chapter 3 of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes.

Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  In addition to the requirements for the form and content of a motor vehicle driver's license under R.S.39:3-10 and a probationary license issued under section 4 of P.L.1950, c.127 (C.39:3-13.4), each initial New Jersey license, each renewal of a New Jersey driver's license, and each probationary license shall indicate the licensee's blood type in such a manner so that it can easily be determined by an emergency responder.

     2.  This act shall take effect on the first day of the eighteenth month after enactment, but the Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission may take such anticipatory acts in advance of that date as may be necessary for the timely implementation of this act.

STATEMENT

This bill would require driver's licenses to indicate the licensee's blood type.  In doing so, first responders and other emergency workers would be able to administer treatments including blood transfusions without first having to type the licensee's blood.  This could save crucial time when treating a patient, especially in situations when it is not feasible to get quick results from a blood test.
