1.1A Senate resolution
1.2expressing the Minnesota Senate's condemnation of the attacks on the United States
1.3Capitol building and our nation's democracy.
1.4WHEREAS, on January 6, 2021, demonstrators in Washington, D.C., and other locations
1.5around the United States vandalized public buildings, threatened the lives of lawmakers, staff, and
1.6the general public, and jeopardized the peaceful transfer of presidential power; and
1.7WHEREAS, the United States Constitution made the right to free speech the very first
1.8amendment in our Bill of Rights, but the behavior at the United States Capitol was a violent assault
1.9on our democracy that should be condemned and rejected by every American; and
1.10WHEREAS, all lawmakers have a duty at the federal, state, and local level to protect
1.11democracy and the safety of our communities; and
1.12WHEREAS, we are grateful for the Capitol Police officers who are working to keep members,
1.13staff, and the Capitol safe and hope for the safety of those at risk; and
1.14WHEREAS, the peaceful transfer of power has been a foundation and hallmark of presidential
1.15elections, and we are committed to upholding the results of the free and fair election that was just
1.16held; and
1.17NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.18condemns the violent behavior in our nation's capital on January 6.
1.19BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare a copy
1.20of this resolution, to be authenticated by his signature and that of the Chair of the Senate Rules and
1.21Administration Committee, and transmit it to Governor Walz.
