1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Alan C. Page.
1.3WHEREAS, Alan Cedric Page was born and raised in Canton, Ohio, attended the University
1.4of Notre Dame, and embarked on a stellar career in college and professional football; and
1.5WHEREAS, while still in the course of that career, as a player for the Minnesota Vikings,
1.6he attended the University of Minnesota Law School, earning his J.D. in 1978; and
1.7WHEREAS, for the next five years, he worked with the firm of Lindquist and Vennum
1.8outside the football season; and
1.9WHEREAS, he was appointed Special Assistant Attorney General in 1985 and promoted
1.10to Assistant Attorney General soon after; and
1.11WHEREAS, in 1992, he was elected Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court,
1.12becoming the first African-American ever to serve on the court; and
1.13WHEREAS, reelected to the court three times, he has served with distinction, crusading
1.14against racial bias in the legal system both in his jurisprudence and in the court's administrative
1.15rules; and
1.16WHEREAS, the Page Educational Foundation, an institution he founded with his wife
1.17Diane, has awarded $12 million to 6,000 students of color at Minnesota postsecondary schools
1.18over the past 26 years; and
1.19WHEREAS, the list of his awards and honors is long and based on a broad range of
1.20services to the legal profession, the larger community, and children throughout the nation; and
1.21WHEREAS, upon reaching the age of 70 in August of this year, Alan Page will retire
1.22from the post of associate justice; and
2.1NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.2extends sincere thanks to Alan Page for his years of work as an Associate Justice and commends
2.3him for his decades of service to the people of Minnesota.
2.4BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.5enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.6Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Alan C. Page.
