1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating IBM on its 100th anniversary.
1.3WHEREAS, IBM was founded on June 16, 1911, and has been a tremendous success over
1.4the past 100 years in pioneering the science of information, changing the way the world works,
1.5and reinventing the modern corporation; and
1.6WHEREAS, the company's long-term view of leadership development and talent
1.7management has helped them affect positive changes within business and society; and
1.8WHEREAS, IBM has pioneered many of the management practices of the 20th century
1.9business, from diversity and accessibility to cross-cultural adaptability to training managers on
1.10a massive scale; and
1.11WHEREAS, the company is investing $6,000,000,000 annually in research and
1.12development, and their 400,000-plus global employees are developing the practices and
1.13discoveries that are creating a "Smarter Planet"; and
1.14WHEREAS, they are working with federal agencies and local governments to streamline
1.15and connect operations and citizens services using cloud computing and to detect waste, fraud,
1.16and abuse using analytics; and
1.17WHEREAS, the IBM office in Rochester is one of the ten largest private employers in
1.18Minnesota, as it has increased from 174 employees in 1956 to over 8,000 workers today, and in
1.192002 it was awarded a MNSTAR Worksite for having safety standards above OSHA standards;
1.20and
1.21WHEREAS, on June 16, 2011, IBM will celebrate its 100th anniversary, which is
1.22unmatched in the world of business and technology, and continues to reinvent itself as a modern
1.23corporation through best practices around strong leadership, management training, and global
1.24growth; and
1.25NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.26congratulates IBM on its 100th anniversary.
1.27BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.28enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.29Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the president of IBM.
