1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the life and work of General Vang Pao.
1.3WHEREAS, General Vang Pao was born on December 8, 1929, in Nong Het, Xiangkhuang
1.4Province, Laos; and
1.5WHEREAS, Vang Pao fought as a teenager against the Japanese in Laos during World War
1.6II, first as an interpreter and then as a Sergeant in the French colonial army; and
1.7WHEREAS, in 1954, Vang Pao became an officer in the Royal Lao Army of the newly
1.8independent Laos; and
1.9WHEREAS, as an officer in the Royal Lao Army, Vang Pao was the only ethnic Hmong to
1.10attain the rank of Major General in the Royal Lao Army; and
1.11WHEREAS, as Major General in the Royal Lao Army, Vang Pao was the Commanding
1.12Officer of Military Region II of Laos, the region which saw the heaviest fighting during the
1.13Indochina War; and
1.14WHEREAS, as a military leader, Vang Pao led many successful battles, often against
1.15overwhelming odds; and
1.16WHEREAS, through the efforts of General Vang Pao and his Hmong forces during the
1.17Vietnam War, countless American lives were saved; and
1.18WHEREAS, General Vang Pao was an important friend and ally to America; and
1.19WHEREAS, for over 50 years, General Vang Pao was a preeminent leader of the Hmong
1.20people and a major factor in the success of Hmong-Americans as they continued to become vital
1.21contributing members of American society; and
2.1NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.2honors the life and work of General Vang Pao, and extends condolences to his family, friends,
2.3and the entire Hmong-American community upon his passing.
2.4BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare
2.5an enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that
2.6of the Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the family
2.7of General Vang Pao.
