1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Benny Arechiga, Knight of the French Legion of Honor.
1.3WHEREAS, the French Legion of Honor was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802
1.4and to this day remains France's most prestigious designation of service rendered in the name of
1.5the French nation and its values; and
1.6WHEREAS, U.S. veterans of World War II who risked their lives to liberate France are
1.7eligible for induction into the Legion of Honor; and
1.8WHEREAS, after being drafted into the army in 1942, Benny Arechiga served during
1.9wartime in the 493rd Field Artillery Battalion and the 12th Armored Division "Hellcats"; and
1.10WHEREAS, as a driver and gunner with a tank crew, Arechiga fought in both the Battle of
1.11the Bulge and at Herrlisheim, where American forces saw heavy casualties; and
1.12WHEREAS, Arechiga went on to play a role in the liberation of Colmar, during which
1.13struggle the Germans were ousted from their last stronghold in France; and
1.14WHEREAS, for valor and courage at a pivotal point in determining the fate of France,
1.15Europe, and the world at large, Benny Arechiga has been named a Knight of the French Legion
1.16of Honor; and
1.17WHEREAS, the honor was bestowed on Arechiga in a ceremony held at the Coon Rapids
1.18VFW; and
1.19NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.20recognizes the distinguished service of World War II veteran Benny Arechiga and congratulates
1.21him on being named Knight of the French Legion of Honor.
1.22BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.23enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.24Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Benny Arechiga.
