1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating the United States men's curling team on winning an Olympic gold medal at the
1.32018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
1.4WHEREAS, representing and competing for one's country in the Olympics is one of the highest
1.5honors an athlete can achieve; and
1.6WHEREAS, Team USA, comprised of four Minnesotans and a Wisconsinite, won an unprecedented
1.7US gold medal in men's curling, upsetting Sweden, the No. 1 team in the world, in the gold medal match;
1.8and
1.9WHEREAS, Team USA had previously medaled only once in Olympic curling, winning a bronze
1.10medal in 2006, and after starting the 2018 Winter Olympics off with a 2-4 record in round-robin play, Team
1.11USA won five consecutive matches, upsetting Canada twice, a team that Team USA had never beaten; and
1.12WHEREAS, Team USA was skipped by John Shuster of Chisholm, who was part of the bronze-medal
1.13team in 2006 and skipped teams in 2010 and 2014; and
1.14WHEREAS, after John Shuster's 2014 Winter Olympics performance, he was not invited to the USA
1.15Curling high performance program and was cut from USA Curling; and
1.16WHEREAS, John Shuster then decided to form his own team made up of three Minnesotans from
1.17Duluth: Joe Polo, Tyler George, and John Landsteiner, and one Wisconsinite from McFarland: Matt Hamilton;
1.18and
1.19WHEREAS, Team Shuster went on to win the US Championship in 2015, beating teams from the
1.20USA Curling high performance program, and as a result, Team Shuster was invited back into USA Curling;
1.21and
1.22WHEREAS, Team Shuster went on to win the US Championship again in 2017, and also won the
1.23US Curling Trials in 2017, qualifying Team Shuster for Team USA's Olympic curling team at the 2018
1.24Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang; and
2.1WHEREAS, in the gold-medal match John Shuster demonstrated his Iron Range fortitude and scored
2.2the biggest shot in US Olympic curling history with a double takeout that broke a 5-5 tie and scored five
2.3points in the eighth end, sealing Team USA's remarkable curling run with a 10-7 defeat of Sweden; and
2.4NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.5congratulates Team USA on winning its first-ever Olympic curling gold and its Minnesotans who represented
2.6the state and their country while achieving this stunning, improbable feat.
2.7BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an enrolled
2.8copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair of the Senate
2.9Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the United States men's Olympic curling team and
2.10its Minnesota Olympic athletes.
