1.2congratulating Stella Huso on serving as the Grand Marshal of the Spud Fest
1.3Parade.
1.4WHEREAS, Big Lake's 47th Annual Spud Fest, a long-running festival of fun that began
1.5as a means to foster a sense of community and raise funds for summer youth recreation programs
1.6in Big Lake and the surrounding areas, was held June 20-23, 2019; and
1.7WHEREAS, the festival features a number of long-standing events, including the parade,
1.8Miss Big Lake Ambassador pageant, softball games and Lakes Run, the potato pancake breakfast,
1.9and carnival rides and events for kids; and
1.10WHEREAS, this year, 100-year-old Stella Huso, Big Lake's last remaining Gold Star Mother,
1.11served as Grand Marshal of the 47th annual parade; and
1.12WHEREAS, the history of Gold Star Mothers dates back to 1928 and the designation is for
1.13mothers who lost sons or daughters in active service of the United States Armed Forces; and
1.14WHEREAS, Stella's family immigrated from Norway and her family has proudly served in
1.15the American military dating back to the Civil War, a war which took the life of her great uncle,
1.16Lars Brua; and
1.17WHEREAS, her maternal grandfather served in World War I; her brother was in the Battle
1.18of the Bulge in World War II, and her sister served in the Womens Army Corps; and
1.19WHEREAS, she was born in Portland, North Dakota, on January 8, 1919, married Ordin
1.20Huso in Mayville, North Dakota, on December 20, 1939, and they had five children: Diane, Steve,
1.21Patricia, Wayde, and Rosemary; and
1.22WHEREAS, she became a Gold Star Mother because her son, Wayde, who had graduated
1.23from Big Lake High School in 1967, was killed in action in Vietnam on August 13, 1969; and
1.24WHEREAS, she also has eight grandchildren, one of whom served in Iraq, 14
1.25great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; and
1.26WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary is important to her and she joined Arthur
1.27Embretson Unit 147 of the Big Lake American Legion on August 1, 1978; and
1.28NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.29congratulates Stella Huso on serving as the Grand Marshal of the Spud Fest Parade and commends
1.30her and her family for their patriotism and their history of military service to their country.
1.31BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.32enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.33Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Stella Huso.
