1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the Stolp Family of Chisago County for being named a 2019 Farm
1.3Family of the Year.
1.4WHEREAS, family farms form the foundation of Minnesota agriculture, drive Minnesota's
1.5economy, and maintain the vitality of Minnesota's rural communities; and the University of
1.6Minnesota is proud to annually recognize families from throughout the state who exemplify the
1.7contributions of family farms to the prosperity of our state; and
1.8WHEREAS, Irv and Lorie Stolp rejoined the family farm near Sunrise in eastern Minnesota's
1.9Chisago County in 1978 and took over the operation ten years later, increasing the size of the farm
1.10from 280 acres to more than 1,000 acres; and
1.11WHEREAS, most of the land was in a crop rotation of corn, soybeans, oats, and hay, and a
1.1270 cow/calf pair herd was kept to improve the pastures; and
1.13WHEREAS, over the years, the Stolps have changed from full tillage to mostly no-till
1.14planting and with help from the Natural Resources Conservation Service and state programs they
1.15have included cover crops in their cropping mix; and
1.16WHEREAS, the Stolps have enjoyed the learning process involved in improving conservation
1.17efforts on their farm; and
1.18WHEREAS, Irv has served in the Army and has been part of the Taylors Falls Fire
1.19Department for 30 years. He has served on the local planning commission for ten years and has
1.20devoted time to the church board at First Lutheran Church; and
1.21WHEREAS, Lorie has maintained the family's home and a business and has served on the
1.22local library board; and
1.23NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.24congratulates the Stolp Family of Chisago County for being named a 2019 Farm Family of the
1.25Year.
1.26BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.27enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.28Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Irv and Lorie Stolp.
