1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the memory of George Rossbach of Maplewood.
1.3WHEREAS, George Rossbach was born in 1922 in St. Paul, graduated from North High
1.4School in 1940, and served in the Navy during World War II as an aviation machinist mate first
1.5class on a B-26 bomber on 17 islands in the Pacific, including Midway and Guadalcanal; and
1.6WHEREAS, prior to the war, George had begun a career at the Joseph E. Johnson
1.7construction firm, and after the war he resettled in Maplewood and resumed work at Joseph E.
1.8Johnson, with one of his first projects being to design a home for himself and his wife, Bonnie; and
1.9WHEREAS, in addition to many homes, George designed and helped build Holy
1.10Redeemer Catholic Church, the Bruentrup Heritage Farm, the Maplewood Community Center's
1.11theater, and the Maplewood City Council building before retiring as vice president of Joseph E.
1.12Johnson in 1986; and
1.13WHEREAS, he served on the Maplewood Community Design Review Board from 1983
1.14to 1986, on the Maplewood Planning Commission from 1986 to 1987, and on the Maplewood
1.15City Council from 1988 to 1997; and
1.16WHEREAS, he served as mayor of Maplewood from 1998 to 1999, was on the Maplewood
1.17Historical Preservation Commission, and played a key role in noting the city's 50th anniversary;
1.18and
1.19WHEREAS, for his outstanding service, he was named Ramsey County Senior Citizen of
1.20the Year and then Minnesota Senior Citizen of the Year at the county and state fairs in 2007, and
1.21was given the Heritage Award by the City of Maplewood in 2010; and
2.1WHEREAS, he and Bonnie, who were married for 67 years, had four sons, Dennis,
2.2Daniel, Paul, and Robert; two daughters, Karen and Patricia; 12 grandchildren, and three
2.3great-grandchildren, and he enjoyed helping his children with all their building projects as
2.4well; and
2.5WHEREAS, on August 25, 2012, at the age of 90, George died after a short illness, and a
2.6Memorial Mass was held on September 5, at St. John's Church in Little Canada; and
2.7NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.8honors the memory of George Rossbach of Maplewood for his contributions to his community,
2.9and it extends sincere condolences to his family and all who knew him.
2.10BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare
2.11an enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that
2.12of the Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the family
2.13of George Rossbach.
