1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the 125th birthday of South St. Paul.
1.3WHEREAS, celebrating the founding of our Minnesota communities fosters a spirit of
1.4community and awareness of our shared history; and
1.5WHEREAS, what is now South St. Paul was originally settled by a band of the Dakota
1.6(Sioux) tribe; on June 30, 1886, the St. Paul Union Stockyards were built in the area now known
1.7as Concord and Grand, and the area grew rapidly; and
1.8WHEREAS, the opening of the first official post office on February 7, 1887, established
1.9"South Park" as a separate village from its original host township of West St. Paul, and the
1.10renamed city of South St. Paul was approved by the state legislature on January 1, 1887; and
1.11WHEREAS, the two individuals most responsible for the early development of South St.
1.12Paul were Charles W. Clark, a real estate investor, civic leader, and manufacturing executive,
1.13and Alpheus B. Stickney, a railroad man, entrepreneur, and expansionist who was the founder of
1.14the St. Paul Union Stockyards Company; and
1.15WHEREAS, South St. Paul became a bustling center of the world's livestock industry, and
1.16for many years the stockyards were the primary engine of the city's economy; and
1.17WHEREAS, the city of South St. Paul formed a Steering Committee to plan and facilitate
1.18a year-long celebration, and the city will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its founding in
1.19March of 2012; and
1.20NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.21congratulates the residents of South St. Paul on the 125th birthday of their community and
1.22extends best wishes to all in the celebration.
2.1BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.2enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.3Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the city of South St.
2.4Paul's 125th Birthday Celebration Steering Committee.
