1.1A Senate resolution
1.2in memory of Brother Michael Collins.
1.3WHEREAS, Brother Michael Collins became president of DeLaSalle High School in
1.41991, after serving as a part-time assistant to the president from 1990-1991, and completing his
1.5doctorate in private school leadership from the University of San Francisco; and
1.6WHEREAS, prior to his presidency, Brother Michael Collins was a long-time educator in
1.7English, religion, and music at both DeLaSalle High School, his alma mater, and Shanley High
1.8School in Fargo, North Dakota; he was publicly acclaimed for his leadership as Choral Director,
1.9leading both the DeLaSalle men's chorus in the World's Fair in 1964 and the Shanley men's choir
1.10in the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. in 1971 and 1978; and
1.11WHEREAS, with DeLaSalle facing a 20-year decline in enrollment and financial
1.12difficulties, Brother Michael Collins returned to the school and, under his leadership, over
1.13$25,000,000 in support was raised from benefactors; these funds were put towards scholarships
1.14for middle-class and low-income students; and
1.15WHEREAS, Brother Michael Collins received the NCEA's 2007 Sister Catherine T.
1.16McNamee, CSJ Award for the promotion of diversity in Catholic education; and
1.17WHEREAS, Brother Michael Collins was a distinguished member of the Christian
1.18Brothers for 54 years, taking his vows in 1957; his dedication to the efforts to retain students
1.19from all racial, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds greatly contributed to the success of
1.20DeLaSalle, and, as president, he created a successful academic environment, in which at least 96
1.21percent of DeLaSalle graduates went on to enroll in college; and
1.22WHEREAS, Brother Michael Collins served on the Board of Directors of the National
1.23Catholic Education Association from 1996-2004, as president of the secondary schools
1.24department and vice-chair of the full board; appointed by former Minnesota Governor Tim
1.25Pawlenty, Brother Michael Collins served two terms on the Council on Black Minnesotans, in
1.26addition to serving as a chair from 2008 to 2010; and
1.27WHEREAS, Brother Michael Collins passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2012, and will
1.28be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him; and
1.29NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that
1.30it recognizes the outstanding life and work of Brother Michael Collins, and extends sincere
1.31condolences to his family and friends upon his passing.
1.32BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare
1.33an enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that
1.34of the Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the family
1.35of Brother Michael Collins.
