1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to education; requiring a mental health curriculum for students in grades
1.36 through 12;proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 120B.
1.4BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.5    Section 1. [120B.21] MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION.
1.6School districts and charter schools must provide mental health instruction for
1.7students in grades 6 through 12 aligned with local health and physical education standards
1.8and integrated into existing programs, curriculum, or the general school environment of
1.9a district or charter school. The commissioner, in consultation with the commissioner
1.10of human services and mental health organizations, shall provide districts and charter
1.11schools with:
1.12(1) age-appropriate model learning activities for grades 6 through 12 that encompass
1.13the mental health components of the National Health Education Standards and the
1.14benchmarks developed by the department's quality teaching network in health and physical
1.15education, and best practices in mental health education; and
1.16(2) a directory of resources for planning and implementing age-appropriate mental
1.17health curriculum and instruction in grades 6 through 12.
1.18EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective the day following final enactment.
