1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to game and fish; modifying requirements for firearms safety certificate;
1.3amending Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 97B.015, subdivision 5a.
1.4BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.5    Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 97B.015, subdivision 5a, is amended to
1.6read:
1.7    Subd. 5a. Exemption for military personnel. (a) Notwithstanding subdivision
1.85, a person who has successfully completed basic training in the United States armed
1.9forces is exempt from the range and shooting exercise portion of the required course of
1.10instruction for the firearms safety certificate. The commissioner may require written proof
1.11of the person's military training, as deemed appropriate for implementing this subdivision.
1.12The commissioner shall publicly announce this exemption from the range and shooting
1.13exercise requirement and the availability of the department's online, remote study option
1.14for adults seeking firearms safety certification. Military personnel are not exempt from
1.15any other requirement of this section for obtaining a firearms safety certificate.
1.16(b) A person exempt from the range and shooting exercise portion of the required
1.17course of instruction for the firearms safety certificate under paragraph (a) may complete
1.18the wildlife identification portion of the required course through the department's online
1.19remote study option and need not meet with an instructor to fulfill the course requirements
1.20and obtain a firearms safety certificate.
