1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to economic development; appropriating money for a grant to the
1.3Minnesota High Tech Association's SciTechsperience program; providing for
1.4science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) internships.
1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.6    Section 1. APPROPRIATION.
1.7$507,000 in fiscal year 2014 and $507,000 in fiscal year 2015 are appropriated from
1.8the general fund to the commissioner of employment and economic development for a
1.9grant to the Minnesota High Tech Association. The Minnesota High Tech Association shall
1.10use the grant to support SciTechsperience, a program that supports science, technology,
1.11engineering, and math (STEM) internship opportunities for college students in their field
1.12of study. The internship opportunities must match college students with paid internships
1.13within STEM disciplines at small, for-profit companies in Minnesota with fewer than 100
1.14employees. At least 100 students must be matched in the first year and at least 150 students
1.15must be matched in the second year. Hiring companies shall receive a dollar-for-dollar
1.16matching stipend for the intern's wages, with a matching stipend cap of $2,500 per intern.
