1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to education; creating a flexible, year-round school calendar;amending
1.3Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 120A.41.
1.4BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.5    Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 120A.41, is amended to read:
1.6120A.41 LENGTH OF SCHOOL YEAR; HOURS OF INSTRUCTION.
1.7(a) A school board's annual school calendar must include at least 425 hours of
1.8instruction for a kindergarten student without a disability, 935 hours of instruction for a
1.9student in grades 1 though 6, and 1,020 hours of instruction for a student in grades 7
1.10though 12, not including summer school. Nothing in this section paragraph permits a
1.11school district to adopt a four-day week schedule unless approved by the commissioner
1.12under section 124D.126.
1.13(b) Notwithstanding other law to the contrary, a school board, with the approval of
1.14its voters at a referendum called by the board under section 126C.17, may implement a
1.15flexible year-round school calendar that is consistent with the hours of instruction under
1.16paragraph (a).
1.17EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective for the 2014-2015 school year and
1.18later.
