1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to veterans; changing the requirement for certain exams that a veteran
1.3must be 50 percent or more disabled to receive disabled veterans preference
1.4points;amending Minnesota Statutes 2010, section 197.455, subdivision 6.
1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.6    Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2010, section 197.455, subdivision 6, is amended to read:
1.7    Subd. 6. Disabled veteran; definitions. For the purpose of the preference to be
1.8used in securing appointment from a competitive open examination or a competitive
1.9promotional exam, "disabled veteran" means a person who has a compensable
1.10service-connected disability as adjudicated by the United States Veterans Administration,
1.11or by the retirement board of one of the several branches of the armed forces, which
1.12disability is existing at the time preference is claimed. For purposes of the preference
1.13to be used in securing appointment from a competitive promotional examination,
1.14"disabled veteran" means a person who, at the time of election to use a promotional
1.15preference, is entitled to disability compensation under laws administered by the Veterans
1.16Administration for a permanent service-connected disability rated at 50 percent or more.
1.17EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective July 1, 2011, for scoring competitive
1.18promotional exams in positions of local government employment occurring on or after
1.19that date.
