1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to public safety; requiring public notice and allowing public participation
1.3in release hearings for the murderers of peace officers;amending Minnesota
1.4Statutes 2010, section 244.05, by adding a subdivision.
1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.6    Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2010, section 244.05, is amended by adding a
1.7subdivision to read:
1.8    Subd. 9. Public notice of release hearing for killers of peace officers. (a) At
1.9least 30 days before a hearing to consider the release of an inmate sentenced to life
1.10imprisonment for committing murder in the first degree involving the killing of a peace
1.11officer or a guard employed at a Minnesota or local correctional facility, the commissioner
1.12shall post on the department's Web site information about the hearing. The information
1.13posted may include only public information about the inmate, the circumstances of the
1.14case, and the scheduled hearing.
1.15(b) A member of the public may submit a written statement at the review hearing.
1.16Nothing in this subdivision may be interpreted to circumvent or limit the rights of
1.17the victim, the victim's family, the inmate, or the criminal justice community specified
1.18elsewhere in law to notice of the hearing or the right to participate in it.
