1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to state government; reducing the number of members of the legislature;
1.3preventing the division of a senate district in the formation of a congressional
1.4district;amending Minnesota Statutes 2010, sections 2.021; 2.031, subdivision 1.
1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.6    Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2010, section 2.021, is amended to read:
1.72.021 NUMBER OF MEMBERS.
1.8For each legislature, until a new apportionment shall have been made, the senate is
1.9composed of 67 56 members and the house of representatives is composed of 134 112
1.10members.

1.11    Sec. 2. Minnesota Statutes 2010, section 2.031, subdivision 1, is amended to read:
1.12    Subdivision 1. Legislative districts. The representatives in the senate and house
1.13of representatives are apportioned throughout the state in 67 56 senate districts and 134
1.14112 house of representatives districts. Each senate district is entitled to elect one senator
1.15and each house of representatives district is entitled to elect one representative. A senate
1.16district may not be divided in the formation of a congressional district.

1.17    Sec. 3. EFFECTIVE DATE.
1.18Sections 1 and 2 are effective for members of the senate and the house of
1.19representatives to be elected at the 2012 general election, to take office in January 2013.
