1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to education finance; authorizing funding for a pilot project designed
1.3to increase the efficiency and efficacy of instructional services through mobile
1.4technologies; appropriating money.
1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.6    Section 1. INNOVATIVE DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION THROUGH MOBILE
1.7TECHNOLOGIES; APPROPRIATION.
1.8(a) $120,000 is appropriated in fiscal year 2013 from the general fund to the
1.9Department of Education for a grant to Independent School District No. 531, Byron, for a
1.10pilot program to demonstrate the cost advantages and improvements in efficiency in
1.11classroom instruction attributable to the deployment and use of tablet-style devices.
1.12(b) The Byron school district must report the results of the pilot program, in the
1.13form and manner prescribed by the commissioner of education, to the 2014 legislature.
1.14The report must:
1.15(1) estimate the financial implications of the pilot program;
1.16(2) analyze the program's effect on student achievement and student engagement;
1.17(3) describe the changes in teachers' curriculum and instructional delivery; and
1.18(4) summarize parent, teacher, and student satisfaction with the program.
1.19EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective July 1, 2012.
