SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 135
Senators Cherry, McMorrow, Moss and Webber offered the following resolution:
Whereas, This fourth of July, our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary and we are reminded of the central principles upon which our great nation was founded; and
Whereas, We uphold the self-evident truths, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, and that foremost among these rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and
Whereas, These unalienable rights are interdependent and their protection strengthens our nation; and
Whereas, The Constitution was ordained to secure these blessings for us and our posterity; and
Whereas, As Thomas Jefferson declared, “The care of human life and happiness and not their destruction is the first and only legitimate object of good government;” and
Whereas, It is fitting, on this momentous occasion, that we reflect anew on the blessings of life, and ensure every citizen can enjoy liberty and pursue happiness; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate, That the members of this legislative body recognize and celebrate the historic and praiseworthy 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America; and be it further
Resolved, That the citizens of this blessed land gather on July 4th to give thanks for the freedoms each American enjoys, and pray that the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness will be protected and preserved forevermore.
