A bill to amend 1949 PA 300, entitled
"Michigan vehicle code,"
by amending section 640 (MCL 257.640).
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec.
640. (1) The state highway transportation
commission and
county road commissions shall determine those portions of a highway
under their jurisdiction where overtaking and passing or driving to
the left of the roadway would be especially hazardous, and by
appropriate signs or markings on the roadway shall indicate the
beginning and end of those zones in a manner enabling an ordinary
observant driver of a vehicle to observe the directions and obey
them. A sign shall be placed to the left of the highway on those
portions of a highway where additional notice is considered
necessary.
(2)
The no-passing zones provided
for by this
sectiondetermined under this subsection shall be based upon a
traffic survey and engineering study.
(2) A person who operates a motor vehicle shall not pass
another vehicle for a distance of not less than 1 mile on the
approach to a work zone. The authority with jurisdiction over the
road where the work zone is located shall post, or cause to be
posted, the following signs:
(a) A warning sign located 2 miles before the beginning of the
work zone in each direction indicating that passing is prohibited
beginning in 1 mile.
(b) A sign located 1 mile before the beginning of the work
zone in each direction indicating that passing is prohibited on the
next 1 mile of the road.
(3) Traffic-control devices installed pursuant to as
prescribed
under this section shall conform to the
state manual and
specifications
as provided for by Michigan
manual of uniform
traffic control devices adopted under section 608.

A person who fails to obey the
traffic-control devices
installed
pursuant to as prescribed
under this section is
responsible for a civil infraction.
