SENATE BILL NO. 1095

A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled
"The revised school code,"
(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1232a.
the people of the state of michigan enact:
Sec. 1232a. (1) The department shall create and administer the teacher continuing education grant program to provide grants to school districts, intermediate school districts, and public school academies for the coverage of costs as provided in this section.
(2) To receive a grant through the grant program, a school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy must apply for the grant in a form and manner prescribed by the department.
(3) The department shall pay each school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy that applies for a grant through the grant program an amount not to exceed $5,000.00.
(4) The grant funding under this section must be used by a recipient school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy only to cover costs associated with an eligible teacher's completion of state continuing education clock hours and other costs specific to that eligible teacher, as determined by the school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy.
(5) As used in this section:
(b) "Eligible teacher" means a teacher who is in his or her first, second, or third year of teaching and who, in the immediately preceding 4 years, was an eligible student teacher at any school district, intermediate school district, or public school academy.
(c) "Grant program" means the teacher continuing education grant program created under subsection (1).
