A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled
"The revised school code,"
(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1250a.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 1250a. (1) A school district, intermediate school
district, or public school academy shall ensure that the method of
compensation implemented under section 1250 provides for an annual
bonus of $1,800.00 for teachers engaged to teach mathematics,
science, or special education in a public school in which at least
50% of the pupils enrolled meet the income eligibility criteria for
the federal free or reduced-price lunch program, as determined
under the Richard B. Russell national school lunch act, 42 USC 1751
to 1769j.
(2) If a collective bargaining agreement is in effect for
teachers of a school district, public school academy, or
intermediate school district as of the effective date of the
amendatory act that added this section, and if that collective
bargaining agreement prevents compliance with subsection (1), then
subsection (1) does not apply to that school district, public
school academy, or intermediate school district until after the
expiration of that collective bargaining agreement.
(3) Subject to an appropriation, the department shall
reimburse a school district, intermediate school district, or
public school academy for costs incurred by the school district,
intermediate school district, or public school academy under this
section.
Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days
after the date it is enacted into law.
