SENATE BILL NO. 221

March 21, 2023, Introduced by Senators RUNESTAD and JOHNSON and referred to the Committee on Elections and Ethics.

A bill to amend 1978 PA 472, entitled

"An act to regulate political activity; to regulate lobbyists, lobbyist agents, and lobbying activities; to require registration of lobbyists and lobbyist agents; to require the filing of reports; to prescribe the powers and duties of the department of state; to prescribe penalties; and to repeal certain acts and parts of acts,"

(MCL 4.411 to 4.431) by adding section 6b.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 6b. (1) Beginning on the effective date of the amendatory act that added this section, the spouse of a member of the senate or the house of representatives shall not be employed as a lobbyist or a lobbyist agent.

(2) An individual who violates subsection (1) is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 90 days or a fine of not more than $1,000.00, or both.
