referred to the Committee on Education.
A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled
"The revised school code,"
(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1278e.
the people of the state of michigan enact:
Sec. 1278e. (1) Subject to subsection (2), in addition
to a STEM endorsement under section 1278d, a school district or public school
academy may notate a pupil's transcript or diploma to indicate that the pupil
has earned an arts and humanities endorsement.
(2) A pupil is
eligible for an arts and humanities endorsement under subsection (1) if the
pupil meets all of the following:
(a) Completes all
applicable requirements of the Michigan merit standard for a high school
diploma under sections 1278a and 1278b.
(b) In addition
to the requirements under subdivision (a), completes 3 credits in any of the
following subjects that align with subject area content expectations or
guidelines, as applicable, developed under section 1278b or more rigorous
content expectations or guidelines:
(i) English.
(ii) Visual arts,
performing arts, or applied arts.
(iii) A language
other than English. For purposes of this subparagraph, both of the following
apply:
(A) American Sign
Language is considered to be a language other than English.
(B) The pupil may
complete all or part of this credit with online course work.
(c) Declares his
or her intention to pursue an arts and humanities endorsement described in
subsection (1) upon entering high school. A pupil may change or add an
endorsement under this section or section 1278d at any time.
(3) A school
district or public school academy that offers an endorsement under subsection
(1) or section 1278d shall develop and implement a pupil tracking program for
pupils pursuing an endorsement that includes, at least, advice and annual
check-ins from a school counselor to assist in keeping the pupil on track to
earn the endorsement.
Enacting section 1.
This amendatory act takes effect 90 days after the date it is enacted into law.
