HOUSE BILL No. 5875
April 25, 2018, Introduced by Rep. Kosowski and referred to the Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs.
A bill to require the department of military and veterans
affairs to develop and distribute certain materials regarding
apprenticeship opportunities; to provide certain training regarding
apprentice programs and other benefits; and to provide for the
powers and duties of certain state and local governmental officers
and entities.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 1. As used in this act:
(a) "County veterans' service officer" means a veterans'
service officer accredited by the United States Department of
Veterans Affairs who is employed by a county department of
veterans' affairs.
(b) "Department" means the department of military and veterans
affairs.
(c) "Veterans' service organization" means a veterans' service
organization accredited by the United States Department of Veterans
Affairs.
Sec. 2. (1) The department shall, in consultation with the
workforce development agency of the department of talent and
economic development, prepare written material in print or
electronic form regarding opportunities to work as an apprentice in
this state. The department shall update the material at least once
per calendar year.
(2) The department shall make the material described in
subsection (1) available on a website maintained by the department
and shall provide the material to the following for distribution to
veterans:
(a) County veterans' service officers.
(b) The department of talent and economic development.
(c) The Michigan National Guard.
(d) Veterans' service organizations identified by the
department.
(3) The department shall provide annual training to county
veterans' service officers and veterans' service organizations
regarding apprenticeship programs and federal and state veterans'
education benefits.
Enacting section 1. This act takes effect 90 days after the
date it is enacted into law.
