HOUSE BILL No. 4059

 

 

January 17, 2019, Introduced by Reps. Coleman, Brenda Carter, Tate, Brixie, Robinson, Tyrone Carter, Whitsett, Love, Wittenberg, Hope, Cynthia Johnson, Elder, Maddock, Brann, Anthony and Rendon and referred to the Committee on Education.

 

     A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

 

"The revised school code,"

 

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1138a.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 1138a. (1) If a public school pupil enrolled in grades 6

 

to 12 is absent from school for up to 1 full school day because the

 

pupil is sounding "Taps" at a military honors funeral held in this

 

state for a deceased veteran, the school officials of a public

 

school shall consider that absence to be an excused absence. The

 

board of a school district or intermediate school district or board

 

of directors of a public school academy shall ensure that its

 

attendance policy is consistent with this section.

 

     (2) As used in this section, "veteran" means that term as

 

defined in section 1 of 1965 PA 190, MCL 35.61.

 

     Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days

 

after the date it is enacted into law.
