SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Jeremiah David Sullivan of Urbana, who
4passed away on July 7, 2016; and
5 WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan was born on November 15, 1938 in
6Norwood, Massachusetts; his parents were Jeremiah F. Sullivan
7and Doris Nutton Sullivan; and
8 WHEREAS, After receiving his bachelor's degree in physics
9as an Alfred P. Sloan Scholar in 1960 from Carnegie Institute
10of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), Jeremiah
11Sullivan earned his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University
12in 1964; he spent his postdoctoral years as a research
13associate in the theoretical physics group at the Stanford
14Linear Accelerator Center; and
15 WHEREAS, In 1967, Jeremiah Sullivan joined the Physics
16Department at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana as
17an associate professor; he became a professor in 1973; he
18retired from the University of Illinois in July of 2006 as the
19head of the Department of Physics, a position he held for six
20years; and
21 WHEREAS, In 1974, Jeremiah Sullivan began what ultimately

1developed into his major research direction when he accepted an
2invitation to become a member of JASON, a group of scientists
3who provide expert technical analyses to the United States
4government on scientific issues relevant to national security;
5each summer, until 2011, he spent six weeks working with the
6JASON group and contributed greatly to its success; he also
7lent his expertise to a number of other important studies and
8reviews that have played key roles in the evolution of United
9States defense policy over the past 20 years; and
10 WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan made significant contributions
11to particle physics in the early years of his career; he was a
12member of numerous influential committees, including the
13United States Department of Energy's High Energy Physics
14Advisory Panel, the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Particle Data
15Group Advisory Panel; the Advisory Committee of the National
16Nuclear Security Administration, the Board of Directors of the
17Arms Control Association, the Distinguished External Advisory
18Committee on Arms Control and National Security of Sandia
19National Laboratories, the External Review Committee of the
20Non-Proliferation, Arms Control, and International Security
21Directorate of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the
22Review Committee of the National Security Directorate of
23Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; he was also the acting
24head of the Theoretical Physics Division at the Fermi National
25Accelerator Laboratory in 1972; and

1 WHEREAS, In 2001, Jeremiah Sullivan was appointed to a
2four-year term as the United States representative to the Panel
3on Security-Related Civil Science and Technology, a
4subcommittee of the NATO Science Committee; he served on the
5Committee on International Security and Arms Control of the
6American Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1988 to 2002 and on
7the Committee on International Security and Arms Control of the
8National Academy of Sciences from 1980 to 1983; and
9 WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan was elected as a Fellow of the
10American Physical Society and the American Association for the
11Advancement of Science; he received an Alfred P. Sloan
12Foundation fellowship in 1968; he was also recognized by the
13American Physical Society with the 2000 Leo Szilard Award; and
14 WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan loved sailing in the Pacific
15waters off San Diego and was delighted to be co-captain of a
16six-person sailboat for two weeks with his friends in Tahiti
17and Bora Bora in 2001; he enjoyed building furniture and wooden
18toys for his children and was handy in fixing anything that
19broke; he enjoyed art and was good at framing pictures for his
20home and for gifts; he enjoyed music, his garden, spending time
21in nature, and traveling with his wife throughout the United
22States and abroad; he also enjoyed reading about history,
23current events, and science of many kinds, and playing with his

1children, his granddaughter, and his cats; and
2 WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan was preceded in death by his
3parents; his sisters, Doris Ann Bradbury and Mary Ellen Hanley;
4and his brother, David Hall Sullivan; and
5 WHEREAS, Jeremiah Sullivan is survived by his loving wife
6of 54 years, Sheila Sullivan; his children, Maureen E. Sullivan
7and Jeremiah J. (Jennifer) Sullivan; his granddaughter, Lily S.
8Sullivan; and his nieces and nephews, Captain Timothy R.
9(Marie) Hanley, United States Navy (Ret.), Mary K. Hanley (Ken
10Scheffler), David L. (Carla) Bradbury, Karole L. Bradbury, and
11Steven E. Bradbury; therefore, be it
12 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
14family and friends, mourn the passing of Jeremiah David
15Sullivan; and be it further
16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Jeremiah Sullivan as an expression
18of our sympathy.
