2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Glen Barton of Peoria, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | October 24, 2016; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Glen Barton was born on August 20, 1939 in Alton, | ||||||
6 | Missouri; his parents were Albert Lee and Jessie Eugenia | ||||||
7 | Smith-Barton; he married Phyllis "Polly" Hayes on July 30, 1993 | ||||||
8 | in Vista, California; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Glen Barton earned his civil engineering degree | ||||||
10 | from the University of Missouri in 1961; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, After college, Glen Barton began his career at | ||||||
12 | Caterpillar, where he worked until his retirement as Chairman | ||||||
13 | and CEO in 2004; as Chairman and CEO, he led Caterpillar to | ||||||
14 | focus on safety and was a driving force of Six Sigma, which | ||||||
15 | focused on improvement to product quality and customer | ||||||
16 | satisfaction; he was instrumental in the creation of the | ||||||
17 | National Mining Association; he was also a tireless champion | ||||||
18 | for education and supported the formation of "Common Ground", | ||||||
19 | Caterpillar's educational program created for school children; | ||||||
20 | and

21 | WHEREAS, Glen Barton was an inductee into the Order of the |

1 | British Empire; he was inducted into the National Mining Hall | ||||||
2 | of Fame and was awarded the Robert Michel Award for Lifetime | ||||||
3 | Achievement by the Creve Coeur Club; he was also nominated as a | ||||||
4 | Local Legend and was awarded the University of Missouri Honor | ||||||
5 | Award for Distinguished Service in Engineering in 1999; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Glen Barton was a member of the Bradley Board of | ||||||
7 | Trustees for two terms and served as Chairman of the Board from | ||||||
8 | 2000 to 2002; he served on the Eureka College Board; he served | ||||||
9 | as President of the export council (GWB) from 2005 to 2006 and | ||||||
10 | was a board member for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality | ||||||
11 | Award; he participated in the American Mining Association Board | ||||||
12 | of Directors; he was a member of the Business Roundtable and | ||||||
13 | Business Council; he served as Chairman of CONEXPO/MINEXPO for | ||||||
14 | over 10 years; he served as Chair of the Manufacturer's | ||||||
15 | Association (CIMA) and the National Mining Association; he also | ||||||
16 | chaired the Capital Campaign for the Red Cross, co-chaired the | ||||||
17 | Capital Campaign for WTVP, and was the Founding Director of | ||||||
18 | Quest Charter Academy; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Glen Barton truly believed in and was committed to | ||||||
20 | the Peoria community, especially in education, recreation, and | ||||||
21 | the arts; he was a major advocate for health care charities and | ||||||
22 | donated to many major local infrastructures, including the | ||||||
23 | local Red Cross Chapter building, the WTVP Digital Conversion | ||||||
24 | and their new building, the Riverfront Museum, Glen Oak Park, |

1 | African charities, the Barton Pavilion and Children's | ||||||
2 | Playhouse, OSF Hospice, UNICOMP Cancer Center, Pere Marquette | ||||||
3 | Hotel, and River Trails Apartments; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Glen Barton was preceded in death by his parents; | ||||||
5 | his brother, C. Dean Barton; and his grandchild, Tanner; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Glen Barton is survived by his wife, Polly; his | ||||||
7 | children, Jennifer (Brian) Dieter, Jeffery (Susan) Barton, | ||||||
8 | Angela Hamernik, and Amy (Tim) Samons; his grandchildren, | ||||||
9 | Rachel, Abby, Noah, George, Madison, Parker, Morgan, Tyler, and | ||||||
10 | Brady; his sister, JoAnne Barton; and his brother, Howard Earl | ||||||
11 | (Judy) Barton; therefore, be it

12 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
13 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his | ||||||
14 | family and friends, mourn the passing of Glen Barton; and be it | ||||||
15 | further
| ||||||
16 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
17 | presented to the family of Glen Barton as an expression of our | ||||||
18 | sympathy.
