SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Peter Stuart Schilke, retired Navy
4Commander, who passed away suddenly on May 19, 2018 at the age
5of 57; and
6 WHEREAS, Peter Schilke was born to Donald and Margaret
7Chernals Schilke on September 20, 1960 in Oak Park, where he
8was raised; he attended Oliver W. Holmes Elementary School and
9Oak Park-River Forest High School until the age of 17 when he
10attended the U.S. Naval Academy; and
11 WHEREAS, Peter Schilke attended the U.S. Navy's Nuclear
12Power School in Orlando, Florida; he later served on submarines
13and competed on the Naval Academy sailing team during which
14time he met Laura Izard at the Storm Trysail regatta
15competition: they married on September 17, 1983; and
16 WHEREAS, Peter Schilke served in the U.S. Navy Reserve from
171988 to 2004; he received a master's in mechanical engineering
18from Yale University in 1998 and continued his education,
19studying naval architecture, submarine weapons, and acoustics
20at MIT; he began his career in 1989 at Electric Boat, leaving
21to work at Millstone Nuclear Power Plant for five years before
22returning to Electric Boat until May of 2018; and

1 WHEREAS, Peter Schilke and Laura settled down in Gales
2Ferry, Connecticut, where they raised their family; he was a
3one-of-a-kind dad, always making his family laugh while
4supporting them in the best ways possible; a State of Illinois
5track relay champion, he loved running and frequently ran with
6his children early in their lives; his sportsman spirit
7permeated all activities he shared with his wife and children;
8he was known for being the loudest one cheering at his
9children's sporting events and enthusiastically rooting for
10all team members; and
11 WHEREAS, Peter Schilke could fix anything around the house
12and loved working on his sailboats, the Captain Crunch and My
13Wawie; he enhanced everyday tasks by putting his own comedic
14spin on them; his numerous stories left his family and friends
15in laughter, and he began and ended all his days with his two
16dogs, Missy and Wolfman Jack, who always put a smile on his
17face; and
18 WHEREAS, Peter Schilke is survived by his wife, Laura Izard
19Schilke; his children, Sarah, Peter Thomas, Erik, and Jonathan;
20his father and father's wife, Donald and Linda Schilke; his
21siblings, Carole Schilke and Paul Schilke (Marta); and his
22parents-in-law Margery and Dr. Mark Izard; therefore, be it

1 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Peter Stuart Schilke and extend our sincere condolences to his
4family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
5further
6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Peter Schilke as an expression of
8our deepest sympathy.
