2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Peter Stuart Schilke, retired Navy | ||||||
4 | Commander, who passed away suddenly on May 19, 2018 at the age | ||||||
5 | of 57; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Peter Schilke was born to Donald and Margaret | ||||||
7 | Chernals Schilke on September 20, 1960 in Oak Park, where he | ||||||
8 | was raised; he attended Oliver W. Holmes Elementary School and | ||||||
9 | Oak Park-River Forest High School until the age of 17 when he | ||||||
10 | attended the U.S. Naval Academy; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Peter Schilke attended the U.S. Navy's Nuclear | ||||||
12 | Power School in Orlando, Florida; he later served on submarines | ||||||
13 | and competed on the Naval Academy sailing team during which | ||||||
14 | time he met Laura Izard at the Storm Trysail regatta | ||||||
15 | competition: they married on September 17, 1983; and

16 | WHEREAS, Peter Schilke served in the U.S. Navy Reserve from | ||||||
17 | 1988 to 2004; he received a master's in mechanical engineering | ||||||
18 | from Yale University in 1998 and continued his education, | ||||||
19 | studying naval architecture, submarine weapons, and acoustics | ||||||
20 | at MIT; he began his career in 1989 at Electric Boat, leaving | ||||||
21 | to work at Millstone Nuclear Power Plant for five years before | ||||||
22 | returning to Electric Boat until May of 2018; and

1 | WHEREAS, Peter Schilke and Laura settled down in Gales | ||||||
2 | Ferry, Connecticut, where they raised their family; he was a | ||||||
3 | one-of-a-kind dad, always making his family laugh while | ||||||
4 | supporting them in the best ways possible; a State of Illinois | ||||||
5 | track relay champion, he loved running and frequently ran with | ||||||
6 | his children early in their lives; his sportsman spirit | ||||||
7 | permeated all activities he shared with his wife and children; | ||||||
8 | he was known for being the loudest one cheering at his | ||||||
9 | children's sporting events and enthusiastically rooting for | ||||||
10 | all team members; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Peter Schilke could fix anything around the house | ||||||
12 | and loved working on his sailboats, the Captain Crunch and My | ||||||
13 | Wawie; he enhanced everyday tasks by putting his own comedic | ||||||
14 | spin on them; his numerous stories left his family and friends | ||||||
15 | in laughter, and he began and ended all his days with his two | ||||||
16 | dogs, Missy and Wolfman Jack, who always put a smile on his | ||||||
17 | face; and

18 | WHEREAS, Peter Schilke is survived by his wife, Laura Izard | ||||||
19 | Schilke; his children, Sarah, Peter Thomas, Erik, and Jonathan; | ||||||
20 | his father and father's wife, Donald and Linda Schilke; his | ||||||
21 | siblings, Carole Schilke and Paul Schilke (Marta); and his | ||||||
22 | parents-in-law Margery and Dr. Mark Izard; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
3 | Peter Stuart Schilke and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
4 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
5 | further
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the family of Peter Schilke as an expression of | ||||||
8 | our deepest sympathy.
