SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
learn of the death of Ralph A. Nagel of Geneva, who passed away
on December 12, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Ralph Nagel was born in St. Charles to William and
Mabel (Timm) Nagel on April 22, 1922; his character was forged
during the Great Depression, when he had to take on multiple
jobs to help support his family; despite the workload, he
earned top grades, played multiple sports, including halfback
for the lightweight team, and landed the lead role in his
school plays at St. Charles High School; he graduated in 1940
and then married Mary Ann Shewalter; during World War II, he
enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in San
Diego, California, where he served as an electrician's mate;
and
WHEREAS, After his service in the Navy, he made a living
delivering milk for Oberweis Dairy and occasionally built
houses, many of which are still standing; in the early 1950s,
after an apprenticeship in Aurora, he started his own
typewriter repair business in the garage of his home; in 1959,
he moved his family to the east side of Geneva and opened
Valley Typewriter Company; for more than 40 years, he fixed and
sold typewriters, adding machines, copy machines, and

calculators from the basement of his home; his service area
reached to Chicago, Elgin, Aurora and all areas in between; and
WHEREAS, Ralph Nagel loved his family and the outdoors; he
enjoyed fishing and swimming and playing golf with his sons; he
and Mary Ann bought property and a cottage on Brandy Lake in
Woodruff, Wisconsin; he was kind, sentimental, and beloved by
animals, children, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and
caregivers; and
WHEREAS, Ralph Nagel was preceded in death by his wife,
Mary Ann; and
WHEREAS, Ralph Nagel is survived by his daughter, Tinya
(Bob) Craig; his sons, Jon and Rick (Paula) Nagel; his
sister-in-law, Diana Shewalter; his grandchildren, Andrew
Craig, Jamie (Rob) Fitzpatrick, and Kathryn and Tricia Nagel;
his five great-grandchildren; and his many nieces and nephews;
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
Ralph A. Nagel and extend our sincere condolences to his
family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
further

presented to the family of Ralph Nagel as an expression of our
deepest sympathy.
