SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Ralph A. Nagel of Geneva, who passed away
4on December 12, 2018; and
5 WHEREAS, Ralph Nagel was born in St. Charles to William and
6Mabel (Timm) Nagel on April 22, 1922; his character was forged
7during the Great Depression, when he had to take on multiple
8jobs to help support his family; despite the workload, he
9earned top grades, played multiple sports, including halfback
10for the lightweight team, and landed the lead role in his
11school plays at St. Charles High School; he graduated in 1940
12and then married Mary Ann Shewalter; during World War II, he
13enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in San
14Diego, California, where he served as an electrician's mate;
15and
16 WHEREAS, After his service in the Navy, he made a living
17delivering milk for Oberweis Dairy and occasionally built
18houses, many of which are still standing; in the early 1950s,
19after an apprenticeship in Aurora, he started his own
20typewriter repair business in the garage of his home; in 1959,
21he moved his family to the east side of Geneva and opened
22Valley Typewriter Company; for more than 40 years, he fixed and
23sold typewriters, adding machines, copy machines, and

1calculators from the basement of his home; his service area
2reached to Chicago, Elgin, Aurora and all areas in between; and
3 WHEREAS, Ralph Nagel loved his family and the outdoors; he
4enjoyed fishing and swimming and playing golf with his sons; he
5and Mary Ann bought property and a cottage on Brandy Lake in
6Woodruff, Wisconsin; he was kind, sentimental, and beloved by
7animals, children, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and
8caregivers; and
9 WHEREAS, Ralph Nagel was preceded in death by his wife,
10Mary Ann; and
11 WHEREAS, Ralph Nagel is survived by his daughter, Tinya
12(Bob) Craig; his sons, Jon and Rick (Paula) Nagel; his
13sister-in-law, Diana Shewalter; his grandchildren, Andrew
14Craig, Jamie (Rob) Fitzpatrick, and Kathryn and Tricia Nagel;
15his five great-grandchildren; and his many nieces and nephews;
16therefore, be it
17 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
19Ralph A. Nagel and extend our sincere condolences to his
20family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
21further
