SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
learn of the death of Demetrios Zemenides of Chicago, who
passed away on August 6, 2020; and
WHEREAS, Demetrios Zemenides was born in 1942 in Cyprus,
which was then a British colony; and
WHEREAS, At age 14, Demetrios Zemenides served in the
freedom fighting group, EOKA; and
WHEREAS, Demetrios Zemenides moved to the United States in
1967; he studied architecture and married his wife, Irene; they
temporarily moved to Cyprus before returning to the United
States after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus; and
WHEREAS, Demetrios Zemenides got involved in the Greek
American community in Chicago; he served as president of the
Illinois Cypriot Brotherhood and was actively engaged in the
parish council of Holy Taxiarchai and St. Haralambos Church in
Niles; and
WHEREAS, The family of Demetrios Zemenides remembers him as
a devoted husband, a loving father, and a wonderful role model;
and

WHEREAS, Demetrios Zemenides was a proud public servant and
worked for decades as an architect for the City of Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Demetrios Zemenides devoted much of his life to
charity and civic participation, habits that he passed along to
his children; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
Demetrios Zemenides and extend our sincere condolences to his
family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the family of Demetrios Zemenides as an expression
of our deepest sympathy.
