| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The social work profession is dedicated to | ||||||
3 | enhancing the well-being of others and meeting
the basic needs | ||||||
4 | of all people, especially the most vulnerable in our society; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Social workers embody this year's Social Work | ||||||
7 | Month theme, "Social Workers: Leaders.
Advocates. Champions"; | ||||||
8 | and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, The social work profession is expected to grow | ||||||
10 | faster than average over the next seven
years, with more than | ||||||
11 | 649,000 people expected to be employed as social workers by | ||||||
12 | 2024; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Over 20,000 licensed social workers are present | ||||||
14 | throughout our State, including in state and
local government, | ||||||
15 | schools, universities, social service agencies, the military, | ||||||
16 | health care and mental health organizations, and owning and | ||||||
17 | operating numerous private
practice small businesses; and

18 | WHEREAS, Social workers are the largest group of providers | ||||||
19 | of mental health services in Illinois and the
U.S. Department | ||||||
20 | of Veterans Affairs is one of the largest employers of social | ||||||
21 | workers holding advanced
degrees; and

1 | WHEREAS, Social workers are present in times of crisis, | ||||||
2 | helping people overcome issues such as death
and grief and | ||||||
3 | helping people and communities recover from natural disasters | ||||||
4 | such as floods and
hurricanes; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Social workers have pushed for decades to ensure | ||||||
6 | rights for all, including women, African
Americans, Latinos, | ||||||
7 | people who are disabled, people who are LGBTQ, and various | ||||||
8 | ethnic, cultural, and
religious groups; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, The social work profession has helped bring about | ||||||
10 | some of the most profound, positive
changes in our society over | ||||||
11 | the past century, including voting rights, improved workplace | ||||||
12 | safety,
minimum wage increases, and social safety net programs | ||||||
13 | that help prevent poverty and hunger; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Social workers continue to engage and bring | ||||||
15 | together individuals, communities, agencies,
and government to | ||||||
16 | help society solve some of the most pressing issues of the day, | ||||||
17 | including immigration
reform, equal rights for all, affordable | ||||||
18 | and adequate health care, mental health care, and
environmental | ||||||
19 | protection; therefore, be it
| ||||||
20 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
21 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare the month of |

1 | March of 2018 as Social Work Month in the State of Illinois; | ||||||
2 | and be it further
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
4 | presented to the National Association of Social
| ||||||
5 | Workers-Illinois Chapter with our sincere appreciation for | ||||||
6 | their efforts.
