| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Odell Long of Chicago, who passed away on | ||||||
| 4 | June 24, 2014; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Odell Long was born in Eutaw, Alabama on May 8, | ||||||
| 6 | 1931 to Henry Dunn and Eliza Horton; at age 16, she moved to | ||||||
| 7 | Chicago and attended Wendell Phillips Academy High School; she | ||||||
| 8 | then attended Jones Commercial where she earned her degree in | ||||||
| 9 | secretarial administration; she was an active member of Greater | ||||||
| 10 | Tabernacle Baptist Church in Chicago where she worked on many | ||||||
| 11 | committees including holding positions on The Mother Board and | ||||||
| 12 | being church secretary; she married Warren G. Long; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Odell Long worked for the United States Post | ||||||
| 14 | Office in Personnel and Procurement as a secretary until | ||||||
| 15 | retiring in 1990 after 40 years; after retirement, she became a | ||||||
| 16 | travel agent with Treasure Island Travel Agency; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Odell Long touched many lives through her | ||||||
| 18 | community activism and organizational affiliations; she
| ||||||
| 19 | spearheaded the creation of her 9600 Block Club, where she | ||||||
| 20 | served as president, was a dedicated
worker on the polls during | ||||||
| 21 | all elections, was a court advocate, a member of CAPS, a 7th | ||||||
| 22 | Ward Senior
Board member, and worked with the homeless and | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | GMAC, all while being sharply dressed in her heels and
bags; | ||||||
| 2 | and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Odell Long always had a thirst for knowledge and | ||||||
| 4 | to share that
knowledge with others, reading every day; her | ||||||
| 5 | shelves were packed with books and on any given day you would | ||||||
| 6 | find
her in her chair with glasses on her nose, reading, | ||||||
| 7 | drinking coffee, and taking copious notes; if she wasn't | ||||||
| 8 | reading, she would dial every phone number she had to check on | ||||||
| 9 | those she cared about; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Odell Long was preceded in death by her husband; | ||||||
| 11 | and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Odell Long is survived by her 2 daughters, Sharon | ||||||
| 13 | Smith and Beverly Long; her son, Lamar Long; grandchildren, | ||||||
| 14 | Sean
Long (Fontella), Gregory Smith, Darius Smith, Joseph | ||||||
| 15 | Williams, and Carla Williams; 2 great- grandchildren,
Nia Long | ||||||
| 16 | and Isaac Smith; her baby sister, Beatrice Dent (Robert); a | ||||||
| 17 | special sister, Johnny Pearl Horton; her
adopted daughter, | ||||||
| 18 | Deneen Sipp; sons, Terrell Washington and Tory Sipp; a host of | ||||||
| 19 | special nieces,
nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and | ||||||
| 20 | many beloved friends and neighbors; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 22 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||

| 1 | Odell Long, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, | ||||||
| 2 | friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
| ||||||
| 3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 4 | presented to the family of Odell Long as an expression of our | ||||||
| 5 | deepest sympathy.
