1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Ronald Gregory Draper; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Ronald Draper was born to Denmon and Gladys | ||||||
5 | Draper in Chicago on February 8, 1950; he learned the meaning | ||||||
6 | of hard work at an early age as a paperboy, bus boy, and number | ||||||
7 | runner in the Chatham community; he graduated at the top of his | ||||||
8 | class from Martha Ruggles Elementary School in 1963; he | ||||||
9 | attended Harlan High School, where he participated in cross | ||||||
10 | country and track and field and broke the state record for the | ||||||
11 | 120-yard high hurdles, leading his team to the Illinois State | ||||||
12 | High School Championship; he enrolled at the North Carolina | ||||||
13 | Colleges for Negroes, now known as North Carolina Central | ||||||
14 | University, on a track and field scholarship in 1967 and | ||||||
15 | became a 5-time College All-American between 1970 and 1971; he | ||||||
16 | earned his bachelor's degree in Political Science from NCCU in | ||||||
17 | 1971; he earned his Juris Doctor in 1974; he married Virginia | ||||||
18 | Reynolds in 1975, and they had two sons, Jason and Brandon | ||||||
19 | Draper; he passed the Cook County Bar Exam in 1975; he married | ||||||
20 | Vivian Boone in 1987, and she preceded him in death in November | ||||||
21 | 1991; and

22 | WHEREAS, After passing the bar, Ronald Draper began | ||||||
23 | working as an assistant district attorney with the Cook County |

1 | State's Attorney office; as a prosecutor, he applied himself | ||||||
2 | vigorously but realized that role was not his true passion; he | ||||||
3 | eventually left the State's Attorney office for private | ||||||
4 | practice as a criminal defense attorney, where he worked for | ||||||
5 | justice and championed the rights of defendants who were sent | ||||||
6 | to prison without a fair trial or by means of false evidence; | ||||||
7 | and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Ronald Draper was an active member of the St. | ||||||
9 | Mark United Methodist Church, Grove Phi Grove, Kappa Alpha | ||||||
10 | Psi, and the Cook County Bar Association; he was an avid golfer | ||||||
11 | and world traveler; therefore, be it

12 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
13 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
14 | Ronald Gregory Draper and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
15 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
16 | further

17 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
18 | presented to the family of Ronald Draper as an expression of | ||||||
19 | our deepest sympathy.
