| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the passing of Nellie Margaret Bixby Anderson of | ||||||
| 4 | Sparta, who passed away on February 9, 2020; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Margaret Anderson was born to James and Melissa | ||||||
| 6 | (Lissie) Bixby in Sparta on October 16, 1928; she attended | ||||||
| 7 | Vernon Grade School in Sparta and graduated from DuSalvo High | ||||||
| 8 | School in Chicago; she married Melvin James Anderson on | ||||||
| 9 | December 14, 1946; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Margaret Anderson worked as a substitute teacher | ||||||
| 11 | at Vernon Grade School and was the first Black History teacher | ||||||
| 12 | at the Sparta High School; she also worked at the Sparta | ||||||
| 13 | Neighborhood Center as a day care teacher for 10 years; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Margaret Anderson was very active in the Civil | ||||||
| 15 | Rights Movement and was a dominant civil rights activist in the | ||||||
| 16 | city of Sparta; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Margaret Anderson was deeply committed to her | ||||||
| 18 | faith; she loved her church, Sparta Church of the Nazarene, | ||||||
| 19 | where she taught Sunday School; she was devoted to taking care | ||||||
| 20 | of her husband and raising her children, grandchildren, | ||||||
| 21 | great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Margaret Anderson was preceded in death by her | ||||||
| 2 | mother and father, Melissa (Lissie) and James Bixby; her little | ||||||
| 3 | brother, James Bixby Jr.; and her step-father, Eddie B. | ||||||
| 4 | Johnson; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Margaret Anderson is survived by her loving | ||||||
| 6 | husband of 73 years, Melvin J. Anderson Sr.; her nine children, | ||||||
| 7 | Althea (Burr) Deming, Charlotte (Keith) Lukes, Denise | ||||||
| 8 | Anderson, Melvin J. Anderson Jr., John Mark Anderson, Craig | ||||||
| 9 | (Onetisha) Anderson, Heather Anderson, Michael Anderson, and | ||||||
| 10 | Christopher (Haliegh) Anderson; her 21 grandchildren, her 19 | ||||||
| 11 | great-grandchildren; her 4 great-great-grandchildren, her | ||||||
| 12 | special sister, Ruth Ann Small; her two sisters-in-law, Bessie | ||||||
| 13 | Selmon and Luvenia Nance; her two brothers-in law, Frank | ||||||
| 14 | Anderson and Michael Anderson; her aunt, Bernice Collins; her | ||||||
| 15 | nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her very dear friends; | ||||||
| 16 | therefore, be it

| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
| 18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
| ||||||
| 19 | Nellie Margaret Bixby Anderson and extend our sincere
| ||||||
| 20 | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
| ||||||
| 21 | her; and be it further

| 22 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
