| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Kieran J. Phelan Jr. of Oak Park, who | ||||||
| 4 | passed away on August 4, 2017, at the age of 82; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan, affectionately known as "K.J.", | ||||||
| 6 | was born in Oak Park to Kieran and Loretta (McMonigle) Phelan | ||||||
| 7 | on March 7, 1935 and was a lifelong resident of Oak Park and | ||||||
| 8 | River Forest; he attended St. Giles Grade School and graduated | ||||||
| 9 | from Fenwick High School in 1953; he graduated from the | ||||||
| 10 | University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana in 1957, where | ||||||
| 11 | he returned for reunions and which always held a special place | ||||||
| 12 | in his heart; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan served honorably as a lieutenant in | ||||||
| 14 | the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Valcour; he continued | ||||||
| 15 | working for the government with the Central Intelligence Agency | ||||||
| 16 | in Washington, D.C., a testament to both his civic pride and | ||||||
| 17 | his broad skill set; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan returned to Oak Park and took over | ||||||
| 19 | the family business, the Reliable Credit Company, of which he | ||||||
| 20 | later became the owner; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan retired after a rich and colorful | ||||||

| 1 | career life in private and government employment, and enjoyed | ||||||
| 2 | spending his time with his lifelong love, Mary Catherine Phelan | ||||||
| 3 | and their children and grandchildren, as well as friends who | ||||||
| 4 | saw "K.J." to be a man with a sharp wit and a broad heart with a | ||||||
| 5 | passionate zeal for life; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan was preceded in passing by his | ||||||
| 7 | parents and his brother, Robert McCarthy; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan is survived by his wife, Mary | ||||||
| 9 | Catherine Phelan; his children, Kieran III (Jacqueline), John | ||||||
| 10 | (Amy), Martin (Leann), Daniel (Beth), and Molly (John) Griffin; | ||||||
| 11 | his grandchildren, John, Anne, Kieran IV, Samantha, Katie, Ben, | ||||||
| 12 | Molly, Joseph, George, Jack, Sarah, Jimmy, Daniel, Michael, | ||||||
| 13 | Lizzie, and Hannah; and the many family members and friends he | ||||||
| 14 | touched throughout his long and full life; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 15 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 16 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 17 | Kieran J. Phelan Jr., and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
| 18 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
| 19 | further
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 21 | presented to the family of Kieran Phelan as an expression of | ||||||
| 22 | our deepest sympathy.
