SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
learn of the passing of Berde Sutchar on December 25, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Berde Sutchar was a lifelong Chicagoland
resident, growing up in the Wicker Park and Humboldt Park
neighborhoods, raising her children in West Rogers Park, and
spending the last 40 years in Evanston; she grew up with her
sisters, Adelle and Jeanette, above the family's small store on
Chicago's north side on West Armitage; her parents were Hyman
and Hilda Scher; and
WHEREAS, Berde Sutchar married Victor Sutchar on July 5,
1942, and worked in an office during World War II while her
husband served in Italy; and
WHEREAS, Berde Sutchar attended Northeastern Illinois
University and received her degree in elementary education and
taught 5th grade at both Aggissez and Rogers Elementary Schools
in Chicago for the next 25 years; and
WHEREAS, Berde Sutchar served several terms as president of
the North Shore Chapter of the Council of Jewish Women; she was
a member of Beth Emmet Congregation in Evanston; as a
descendant of Russian Jews, she opened up her home, especially

during Pesach to many of the new Russian Jewish immigrants to
Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Berde Sutchar was an avid sportswoman; she
participated in bowling, golf, and bridge; she passed on her
athletic ability to her children and grandchildren who became
successful in numerous sports in their own right; and
WHEREAS, Berde Sutchar was married to Victor for 68 years;
they had 2 children, Bruce Russell (Ilse Jaeger) and Kenneth
Evan (Teresa Kenny) and 5 grandchildren, Averill, Joshua,
Solomon, Hana, and Isabella; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
Berde Sutchar, and we extend our sincere condolences to her
family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
presented to the family of Berde Sutchar as an expression of
our deepest sympathy.
