2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Richard P. Henke, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | April 9, 2023; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Richard Henke graduated cum laude from Knox | ||||||
6 | College in 1956 with a degree in chemistry; while at Knox, he | ||||||
7 | participated in intramural swimming and track, served as | ||||||
8 | treasurer of Campus Chest, and was a member and president of | ||||||
9 | Phi Gamma Delta; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Richard Henke attended Stanford Medical School | ||||||
11 | and received his M.D. in 1960; he continued his career with an | ||||||
12 | internship and residencies in internal medicine and pathology | ||||||
13 | at the University of Minnesota and the University of | ||||||
14 | California School of Medicine; and

15 | WHEREAS, Richard Henke was certified by the American Board | ||||||
16 | of Pathology in 1966 and served as a pathologist in private | ||||||
17 | practices in Daly City and Long Beach, California; he was | ||||||
18 | affiliated with the American Society for Microbiology and the | ||||||
19 | American Society of Clinical Pathologists; he served on the | ||||||
20 | board of the Association for Practitioners in Infection | ||||||
21 | Control and for two terms as the president of the California | ||||||
22 | Society of Pathologists; and

1 | WHEREAS, Richard Henke was involved in graduate and | ||||||
2 | postgraduate education at the University of California, | ||||||
3 | Irvine, California State University Dominguez Hills, and | ||||||
4 | California State University of Long Beach, where he helped | ||||||
5 | educate physicians, nurses, and laboratory technologists; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Richard Henke's devotion to both his family and | ||||||
7 | Knox College was evident to all who knew him; he and his late | ||||||
8 | wife, Sophia Dimitriadis, made several notable contributions | ||||||
9 | to the college, including the Henke Distinguished | ||||||
10 | Professorship endowment, which honors a faculty member who | ||||||
11 | demonstrates excellence in undergraduate teaching, the Richard | ||||||
12 | P. and Sophia D. Henke Music Fund, which supports various | ||||||
13 | initiatives and capital needs of the music department, | ||||||
14 | enabling the program to be dynamic and student-centered, and | ||||||
15 | the Richard P. and Sophia D. Henke Library Fellowship, which | ||||||
16 | provides an immersive experience in academic librarianship for | ||||||
17 | students interested in libraries and archives as a possible | ||||||
18 | career; and

19 | WHEREAS, Richard Henke was an active volunteer in his | ||||||
20 | community, local city government, library district, and | ||||||
21 | professional organizations; and
| ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Richard Henke was preceded in death by his wife, |

1 | Sophia; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, Richard Henke was | ||||||
3 | survived by loving family members, including his son, William | ||||||
4 | Henke, and his granddaughter, Sophia Elswick; therefore, be it
| ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
6 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
7 | Richard P. Henke and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
8 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
9 | further
