| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of James P. Hughes Sr., who passed away on | ||||||
| 4 | November 21, 2012; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, James Hughes Sr. was born in Indiana and raised in | ||||||
| 6 | the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, After graduating college in 1942, James Hughes Sr. | ||||||
| 8 | enlisted in the United States Army, where he served in the 17th | ||||||
| 9 | and 82nd Airborne Divisions; he subsequently earned his law | ||||||
| 10 | degree in 1948 from DePaul University and began practicing real | ||||||
| 11 | estate law; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, James Hughes Sr. had a long and distinguished | ||||||
| 13 | career as a builder and land developer; in 1961, he formed the | ||||||
| 14 | Wiseman Construction Company with Jerry A. Wiseman; in 1985, he | ||||||
| 15 | purchased the remaining shares of the company; under his | ||||||
| 16 | direction, the firm built an estimated 35,000 homes in the | ||||||
| 17 | south suburbs, Wheaton, Naperville, Plainfield, Oswego, | ||||||
| 18 | Sycamore, DeKalb, Sugar Grove, and North Aurora; he also built | ||||||
| 19 | apartment buildings, shopping centers, and office buildings; | ||||||
| 20 | and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, In 1964, James Hughes Sr. fulfilled his lifelong | ||||||

| 1 | dream of living on a farm by moving to the 800-acre Cloonlara | ||||||
| 2 | Farm near Elburn; he grew corn, wheat, and soybeans and raised | ||||||
| 3 | livestock on the farm; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, James Hughes Sr. was an avid White Sox fan, tuning | ||||||
| 5 | into day games by radio in his office; he was an avid supporter | ||||||
| 6 | of Marmion Academy and Rosary High School and was a past | ||||||
| 7 | chairman of the Missionary Vehicles Association; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, James Hughes Sr. was preceded in death by his | ||||||
| 9 | loving wife, Dorothy; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, James Hughes Sr. is survived by his sons, James, | ||||||
| 11 | Michael, and Sean; his daughters, Maureen McKanna and Sheila | ||||||
| 12 | Fitzsimmons; and his 13 grandchildren; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 13 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 14 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
| 15 | his family and friends, the passing of James P. Hughes Sr.; and | ||||||
| 16 | be it further
| ||||||
| 17 | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | ||||||
| 18 | presented to the family of James Hughes Sr. as an expression of | ||||||
| 19 | our sympathy.
