1 | SENATE RESOLUTION | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Harold Junior Land of Topeka, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on May 15, 2024; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Harold Land was born in Pekin to Harold and Mary | ||||||
6 | (Watson) Land on December 27, 1949; he was drafted into the | ||||||
7 | United States Army as an 11B Infantryman in 1969, where he | ||||||
8 | completed Expert Jungle Training in Panama before being | ||||||
9 | deployed to Vietnam with the 9th Infantry Division; he took | ||||||
10 | part in months of heavy combat operations near Saigon and the | ||||||
11 | Mekong River Delta and was awarded two Purple Hearts, the | ||||||
12 | Combat Infantry Badge, and the Vietnam Service Medal with two | ||||||
13 | Bronze Service Stars; he was honorably discharged in 1971; he | ||||||
14 | married Carol Siltman-Terrill in Topeka on June 29, 1991; and

15 | WHEREAS, Harold Land retired from the United States Post | ||||||
16 | Office in 2016, after 20 years of service, and was a member of | ||||||
17 | the National Postal Mail Handlers Union; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Harold Land supported the Disabled American | ||||||
19 | Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and multiple other | ||||||
20 | veteran organizations; he always had an American Flag on | ||||||
21 | display and served as a mentor for younger generations of | ||||||
22 | veterans in his family; and

1 | WHEREAS, Harold Land loved the outdoors and kept busy | ||||||
2 | hunting, fishing, splitting wood, caring for his horses, and | ||||||
3 | performing all the duties that came with caring for his | ||||||
4 | property; in the summertime, he could be found in his garden | ||||||
5 | working hard to produce a big harvest of vegetables to | ||||||
6 | preserve for his family; he enjoyed NASCAR, riding his Harley, | ||||||
7 | and a good game of cards; he treasured his time with family, | ||||||
8 | always taking the time to teach them valuable lessons when the | ||||||
9 | opportunity arose; and

10 | WHEREAS, Harold Land was preceded in death by his parents; | ||||||
11 | his sister, Darlene Land; his brothers-in-law, Joe Stoehr, Bob | ||||||
12 | Westerhouse, and Bob VanEtten; his nieces, Bobbi Jo Tyler and | ||||||
13 | Amber Land; and his nephew, J.D. Siltman; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Harold Land is survived by his wife, Carol; his | ||||||
15 | sons, Scott (Pam) and Matt (Chelsea) Terrill; his | ||||||
16 | grandchildren, Chris, Kylie (Seth Newcomb), and Emily Terrill | ||||||
17 | (Nick Sondag); his great-grandchildren, Ryan Terrill, Noah and | ||||||
18 | Theodore Newcomb, and Hadley and Lucah Sondag; his sisters, | ||||||
19 | Vivian Stoehr, Peggy Westerhouse, Linda VanEtten, Regina | ||||||
20 | Trout, and Cherie Helfers; his brothers, Gary (Jodi), Terry | ||||||
21 | "Turk" (Mary), and Doug (Janice) Land; and several nieces and | ||||||
22 | nephews; therefore, be it
