| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of
Hurley L. Green, who passed away on | ||||||
| 4 | November 1, 2012; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Hurley Green was born on April 13, 1927, in | ||||||
| 6 | Beaumont, Texas; his parents were Atlena and Hurley Green; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Hurley Green moved to Chicago with his mother as a | ||||||
| 8 | young man; he graduated from Burke Elementary School and | ||||||
| 9 | DuSable High School, where he met his high school sweetheart | ||||||
| 10 | and wife of 57 years, Thelma Mills Green; he subsequently | ||||||
| 11 | graduated from Wilson Junior College and completed his higher | ||||||
| 12 | education at Columbia College; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Hurley Green served his country with pride as a | ||||||
| 14 | member of the United States Air Force; he was honorably | ||||||
| 15 | discharged from the service in 1948; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, One of young Hurley Green's goals in life was to | ||||||
| 17 | buy a home for his family; after several stops on their journey | ||||||
| 18 | to homeownership, he and his family moved into their first home | ||||||
| 19 | on 73rd and Halsted in 1963; the family ultimately moved into a | ||||||
| 20 | "gingerbread house" on 76th and Euclid, which was purchased in | ||||||
| 21 | 1966; and

| 1 | WHEREAS, Hurley Green began his long and storied career in | ||||||
| 2 | journalism during the 1970s; in addition to becoming the | ||||||
| 3 | publisher of the Bulletin Newspapers, he became the host of | ||||||
| 4 | "Issues Unlimited", a historic television show that became a | ||||||
| 5 | fixture on WGN Channel 9 on Sunday mornings for 3 years; the | ||||||
| 6 | well-rated TV program featured him moderating a blue-ribbon | ||||||
| 7 | panel of city media representatives and interviewing local and | ||||||
| 8 | national newsmakers of the day; his weekly show introduced | ||||||
| 9 | Chicago viewers to many political and social activists of the | ||||||
| 10 | day; he also served as the author of the weekly Page 4 | ||||||
| 11 | "Shifting Scenes" column in the Bulletin Newspapers; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Hurley Green was a fixture of his community and | ||||||
| 13 | made many local and national connections, exercising influence | ||||||
| 14 | in both political parties and in the entertainment and sports | ||||||
| 15 | worlds; his circle of associates included both Mayor Daleys, | ||||||
| 16 | both of Chicago's African-American mayors, Mayor Harold | ||||||
| 17 | Washington and Mayor Eugene Sawyer, all of the Southside | ||||||
| 18 | aldermen and committeemen, Julian Bond, Rev. Ralph D. | ||||||
| 19 | Abernathy, James Compton, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, and Rev. | ||||||
| 20 | Martin Luther King; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Hurley Green was the recipient of numerous honors, | ||||||
| 22 | awards, and recognitions by local and national organizations | ||||||
| 23 | for his contributions as a citizen, community servant, and | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | newspaper publisher; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Hurley Green was preceded in death by his loving | ||||||
| 3 | wife, Thelma; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Hurley Green is survived by his sons, Hurley III | ||||||
| 5 | and Lee J. Green; his grandchildren, Jason, Jamal, and Nicole; | ||||||
| 6 | his great-grandson, Sidney; and his countless friends, | ||||||
| 7 | associates, and weekly readers; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 8 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 9 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
| 10 | his family and friends, the passing of Hurley L. Green; and be | ||||||
| 11 | it further
| ||||||
| 12 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 13 | presented to the family of Hurley Green as an expression of our | ||||||
| 14 | sympathy.
