SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Epilepsy is a medical condition that produces
3seizures affecting a variety of mental and physical functions;
4and
5 WHEREAS, 65 million people around the world have epilepsy;
6and
7 WHEREAS, Nearly three million people in the United States
8have epilepsy; one in 26 people in the United States will
9develop epilepsy at some point in their lifetime; there are
10150,000 new cases of epilepsy in the United States every year;
11and
12 WHEREAS, Over 200,000 people in the State of Illinois have
13epilepsy; and
14 WHEREAS, Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological
15disorder in the United States after migraines, stroke, and
16Alzheimer's disease; the prevalence of epilepsy is greater than
17autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis,
18and Parkinson's disease combined; and
19 WHEREAS, One-third of people with epilepsy live with
20uncontrollable seizures because no available treatment works

1for them; and
2 WHEREAS, 50,000 people die from epilepsy-related causes in
3the United States every year; and
4 WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation affiliates in Illinois
5offer counseling, advocacy, and educational services to people
6with epilepsy, their families, and the communities in which
7they live; and
8 WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation affiliates of Illinois
9lead the fight to stop seizures, find a cure, and overcome
10challenges created by epilepsy; therefore, be it
11 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare the date of
13March 19, 2020 as Illinois Epilepsy Advocacy Day in the State
14of Illinois; and be it further
15 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
16presented to the Epilepsy Foundation of Chicago, the Epilepsy
17Foundation of North Central Illinois, and the Epilepsy
18Foundation of Southern Illinois.
