| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Helen Dorothy Schroder of Naperville, who | ||||||
| 4 | passed away on September 10, 2010; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, She was born Helen Dorothy Grieve on her family's | ||||||
| 6 | farm in Elmira; she was a graduate of Kewanee High School; | ||||||
| 7 | after receiving a full scholarship, she graduated with a | ||||||
| 8 | bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in 1939; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, After college, she taught for several years at | ||||||
| 10 | elementary schools in central Illinois; in 1942, she married | ||||||
| 11 | her husband, Keith, with whom she had three children; while | ||||||
| 12 | raising her children in Naperville, Mrs. Schroder volunteered | ||||||
| 13 | for numerous charitable organizations, including Meals on | ||||||
| 14 | Wheels, the YMCA, and PADS; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, She worshipped at First Congregational Church in | ||||||
| 16 | Naperville for more than five decades; during the 1970s and | ||||||
| 17 | 1980s, Mrs. Schroder also served as a volunteer with Little | ||||||
| 18 | Friends in Naperville, an organization that supports children | ||||||
| 19 | and adults with severe learning disabilities; there she worked | ||||||
| 20 | in the Parent-Infant Program and was given the 1983 Volunteer | ||||||
| 21 | of the Year award, presented to her by then United States | ||||||
| 22 | Senator Charles Percy;
and

| 1 | WHEREAS, She and her husband joined the Illinois Nuclear | ||||||
| 2 | Weapons Freeze Campaign; the April 26, 1982 edition of Newsweek | ||||||
| 3 | magazine included a picture of her holding up a sign that read: | ||||||
| 4 | "End the Arms Race! Save the Human Race!"; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Helen Schroder is survived by her daughters, Mary | ||||||
| 6 | Sue Kitchen and Elizabeth Hopkins; her son, Robert; her sister, | ||||||
| 7 | Betty Hyer; her eight grandchildren; and her six | ||||||
| 8 | great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 9 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 10 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
| 11 | her family and friends, the passing of Helen Schroder; and be | ||||||
| 12 | it further

| 13 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 14 | presented to the family of Helen Schroder as a symbol of our | ||||||
| 15 | sincere sympathy.
