SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Helen Dorothy Schroder of Naperville, who
4passed away on September 10, 2010; and
5 WHEREAS, She was born Helen Dorothy Grieve on her family's
6farm in Elmira; she was a graduate of Kewanee High School;
7after receiving a full scholarship, she graduated with a
8bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in 1939; and
9 WHEREAS, After college, she taught for several years at
10elementary schools in central Illinois; in 1942, she married
11her husband, Keith, with whom she had three children; while
12raising her children in Naperville, Mrs. Schroder volunteered
13for numerous charitable organizations, including Meals on
14Wheels, the YMCA, and PADS; and
15 WHEREAS, She worshipped at First Congregational Church in
16Naperville for more than five decades; during the 1970s and
171980s, Mrs. Schroder also served as a volunteer with Little
18Friends in Naperville, an organization that supports children
19and adults with severe learning disabilities; there she worked
20in the Parent-Infant Program and was given the 1983 Volunteer
21of the Year award, presented to her by then United States
22Senator Charles Percy; and

1 WHEREAS, She and her husband joined the Illinois Nuclear
2Weapons Freeze Campaign; the April 26, 1982 edition of Newsweek
3magazine included a picture of her holding up a sign that read:
4"End the Arms Race! Save the Human Race!"; and
5 WHEREAS, Helen Schroder is survived by her daughters, Mary
6Sue Kitchen and Elizabeth Hopkins; her son, Robert; her sister,
7Betty Hyer; her eight grandchildren; and her six
8great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
11her family and friends, the passing of Helen Schroder; and be
12it further
13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Helen Schroder as a symbol of our
15sincere sympathy.
